Beginning of DesignCrowd- Alec Lynch and Adam
DesignCrowd, founded by Alec Lynch in 2008, works with one of the largest groups of designers from across the world to meet a client's design demands. Adam Arbolino, a co-founder, joined the company a year later, in 2009. The two founders met while studying programming and information technology at the University of Technology in Sydney. Alec and Adam have previously attempted but failed to launch another business together; DesignCrowd is their second effort together.
The website is really simple to use; all you have to do is upload a brief and pay the amount that corresponds to your budget. The brief is then taken up by designers who are ready to work within your budget and offer you many possibilities. Alec assembled the first design team for the website by contacting designers and asking them to create Designcrowd's own logo. Alec notes that after they had the first team in place, they focused on attracting clients and designers.
Alec bootstrapped the business and relied on loans from friends and family to stay afloat. For him personally, the first two years were the most difficult. He spent all of his money, maxed up three credit cards, and borrowed $30,000 from relatives and friends.
In 2009, the firm earned $300,000 from four angel investors, and since then, Starfish Ventures has invested $6 million in the company. DesignCrowd, which claims to be tripling its business every year and generating $1 million in sales each month in 2013, appears to have weathered the storm. Clients are paid fees for posting projects on DesignCrowd, while designers are invoiced a 15% commission on their profits through the site. DesignCrowd works with designers in over 100 countries, with the United States, India, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Indonesia ranking first through fifth.
With around 20,000 members, India is the second-largest design centre, accounting for 21% of DesignCrowd's design community (second only to the United States with 26%). India has 14 percent of the top 1,000 designers on DesignCrowd, making it the most populous country in the world.
