'10 Cent Tom'- Tom Pirie- Gold Coast- An Ecopreneur
'10 Cent Tom,' of the Gold Coast Tom Pirie, an ecopreneur is one step closer to realising his ambition of opening a new recycling centre that employs people with disabilities.
Story of Tom and Evolvment of his Startup
Tom Pirie aka 10 Cent Tom resides in Robina, Gold Coast. He was diagnosed with severe scoliosis at the age of 15 and has an intellectual disability. He had surgery to realign his spine as a result of this. He began collecting bottles and cans from his neighbourhood a few years ago. He enjoyed getting to know his neighbours and making friends while also earning some pocket money at first. He, on the other hand, enjoyed the challenge and adventure of collecting containers from his neighbours and decided to turn it into a company.
The 19-year-old has made a name for himself on the Gold Coast for collecting bottles, containers, and cans from homes and businesses and exchanging them for cash through the Containers For Change programme. What began as a pastime and ambition to minimise trash in his neighbourhood quickly evolved into a humanitarian vision for the kid and self-described "Eco-preneur," who hopes to utilise the funds raised to help the handicapped community. Tom was diagnosed with severe scoliosis at the age of 15 and now has an intellectual disability.
Tom said that the eco-initiative works by encouraging people to participate by collaborating with their homes, companies, and activities. Businesses can request a '10 Cent Tom' container collecting bin to support the effort, which will be collected free of charge and swapped for cash to assist the campaign's aims. "If you have any bottles or cans, please reach out," he urged. "Nothing is too large or too tiny."
He now collects 10 cent cans and bottles from homes, businesses, and events all across the Gold Coast. 10 Cent gets dropped off and picked up by Tom and his mother. Tom has wheelie bins all across the Gold Coast, from Pimpama to Palm Beach, and plans to expand to Brisbane soon. All donations go to a charity called 10 Cent. Tom's dream is to create a recycling centre on the Gold Coast and hire individuals with impairments. Tom is a gregarious and outgoing individual who strives to improve his life and his surroundings. He has struggled to fit in and make friends in the past, so he decided that starting a business would be a fantastic way to gain confidence and meet new people.
Tom's Vision
When Tom first launched 10 Cent, he didn't have much money. He had a vision. Tom wants to contribute to the reduction of garbage and the creation of a better environment for himself and future generations. To do this, he planned to use recycling wheelie bins to collect cans and bottles from businesses all across the Gold Coast. Hundreds of containers are used by businesses and events each year, so he felt it would be a fantastic chance to assist them to recycle and decreasing trash. Tom's ambition extends beyond wheelie bins. In the end, he wants to build his own 10 Cent Tom recycling depot and hire disabled people.
